Careful equipment selection has always been a central part of how we approach expeditions at Polar Exped. We place a strong emphasis on choosing gear that is appropriate for the objective, the conditions, and the way it will be used over time.

This consultation is for those who are planning their own journeys - even if those trips are not part of the expeditions offered by Polar Exped. All our expeditions include gear consultations by default.

Choosing the right equipment

Choosing the right equipmentis not about following generic lists. Sometimes it means simplifying, sometimes it means investing in more capable gear, but always with the aim of avoiding the wrong choices. Small, informed decisions can have a significant impact once you're committed to a route and operating far from easy exits.

Who's it for?

This consultation is intended for people with relevant outdoor experience who are preparing for a more demanding objective: longer distances, colder conditions, unfamiliar terrain, or a higher degree of independence. This is not a beginner service or a substitute for basic training. If you're completely new to winter travel, expedition environments, or self-supported trips, guided expeditions or structured courses are likely a better starting point.

There is no fixed structure. The consultation is adapted to your needs - whether that means reviewing a complete setup, refining key systems, or working through specific questions before making final purchases. The emphasis is on understanding trade-offs, building reliable systems, and making decisions you can justify in the field. We focus on aligning your equipment with the realities of your plan, rather than theoretical recommendations.

The consultation takes place online. You share your plans and gear list in advance, and we work through them together in a focused, practical way.

The consultation is a paid service. This helps ensure that the time and preparation involved are taken seriously on both sides. It is not intended as a primary source of income, but as a way to share experience in a focused and useful way. The cost is agreed in advance and set fairly, with the aim that the guidance you receive helps avoid costly mistakes and provides clear value relative to the investment.
