Polar Exped makes expeditions accessible to those who want to experience the beauty of Arctic on the Kungsleden Trail. We want to give you a 5-star experience by taking care of everything so you can focus on the expedition itself.
Discover Europe's last wilderness
A Polar Expedition doesn't have to be to the North or South Pole. There are places much closer to home and less extreme. Northern Sweden is an amazing place that offers beautiful landscapes and is more accessible. It's a place where you can look and not see anything or anyone around you - that's why they call it Europe's last wilderness.
Our Swedish expeditions take place within the Arctic Circle, on the northern section of the Kings Trail (Kungsleden in Swedish). The whole trail continues for 440km, but we use the best part of it and it's around 90km. We're not climbing mountains, we're going through the valleys.
Kungsleden - that's the name of the trail in Sweden on which the expeditions take place. The landscape is very beautiful but we should not forget that the weather can change in a matter of minutes. It can completely shift from a sunny day to a total whiteout. If you don't know where you are and how to behave, you can get yourself into trouble. Luckily you won't be alone and we come well prepared.
We use high quality Nordic back country skis to transport ourselves over the snow. It's like walking with a slight glide and it's very easy to learn. Just putting one foot in front of the other in an environment allows your mind to go blank at times and this creates a meditative experience.
Do you want to experience the magical phenomenon of Aurora Borealis? You're in luck! Abisko, Sweden is the northern lights capital of the world. That is where we will start our expedition. You're likely to see the northern lights on the whole length of the trail. This photo was taken near the end of the trail and the sky was fully lit.
With Polar Exped, you can choose from two types of Nordic ski touring expeditions in Sweden. Both use the same route and have the same duration. The main difference is accommodation - either huts or tents. Both are unique experiences with their own benefits. The hut tour is more accessible as it requires less gear and is therefore easier to do.
